Every now and then an article about Chinese business comes along so packed with insight that it can save you hours of stress and aggravation, and maybe even piles of cash.

"Chinese Culture for the Frustrated Foreign Buyer" by David Dayton at Silk Road International is such an article. Here's a taste:

On honesty: "go in knowing that 'dishonest is part of their business model'"

On guilt: "Things are not done for our western 'right reasons' but rather for convenience, opportunity, necessity, duty, honor, pride, face, etc."

On contracts: "The reality of contracts (even the good Chinese ones) is that no one but you has ever read them.  When contracts are broken in China (and court is not an option) your going to just hear 'well, we don’t really work like that in China'"

On retaliation: "when you make demands on a broken contract or hold people accountable in public for personal mistakes or force specific processes to get things done you will be punished for it.  I promise. You many never know what the retaliation will be, but it will happen."
