Meet Stephen Choi, Director of Dragon Member Services

Stephen Choi
An experienced international business person who divides his time between Shanghai and Vancouver, Stephen Choi is Dragon Business Network's VP of China Partnerships and Head of the Dragon Member Support Team. That means it's his responsibility to make sure that Dragon Members are networking effectively, making the needed connections and getting maximum benefit from their memberships.

Dragon Members contact Stephen through the Dragon Member Area. Affable and energetic, Stephen enjoys interacting directly with Dragon Members.

Much of Stephen's business success stems from his interest in pioneering new business models. In 1995 he founded one of Vancouver's first ISPs, Hermes Net Solutions (which he later sold to Cypost in 1998). China is his current business focus. Stephen graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Marketing from the Univerisity of British Columbia.

We asked Stephen a few questions commonly on the minds of those new to doing business in China.

What's the best starting point for an individual or Western company interested in exploring China business opportunities?

I think a good starting point is to look first in your immediate network of contacts to find who is already doing business here.

A friendly face that can provide some direction and support will be invaluable. A great support system will make all the difference in the world.

I found that business people that are already doing business here like sharing their war stories and like to help others as they have been helped.

What's the biggest misconception about China?

I think the biggest misconception is that business is done differently in China. I feel there are more similarities than differences. Business is business. Trust your instincts. A good business person should be able to adapt to new surroundings and execute his or her vision.

Is it essential to speak Chinese to do business effectively in China?

No, I don't think so. Many local Chinese who deal with foreign companies will speak English and you can hire translators and assistants who can help you for a very reasonable cost. If you don't speak Chinese, don't use not knowing the language as an excuse to stop your entry into China.

Is it absolutely necessary to have a China-based consultant or Chinese business partner?

No, I do not think it's absolutely necessary. However, a partner will make your entry into the market easier and faster. Finding the right partner will be one of your hardest decisions. Take your time to find the right one.
